Stay Beaming Through The Holidays

Welcome To The Holidays!

Yes, it’s that time of year again where social occasions should be called mandatory obligations, and where not partaking in a cocktail will get you named Ebenezer Scrooge quicker than you can say Bah Humbug.  You visit your family, your partner’s family, your work family, your friend’s work family, and while much of it may be fun and entertaining much of it may be out of obligation.  Either way all too often we take refuge in too many cocktails, too many cheese plates, too many buttered rolls, too many traditional treats, all inevitably creating an acid environment in our bodies making us feel tired, heavy, bloated, and contributing to the so-called seasonal seven (pounds) that rears its ugly head by January (hmmm, and i wonder what your new years resolution will be again?).

Thankfully B Bar will be open next week with the absolute healthiest juices, smoothies, and foods to help you beam through the holidays.  Our next Reset, Renew, Rejuvenate raw food cleanse will be offered in January.  We’ll host one 4 day program per week January 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th and enrollment is limited to only 50 people each week.  Sign up early (to avoid a wait list) and stock your stuffings with B Bar gift cards (email Lisa for gift cards: lisa@bebeaming.com).

Meanwhile….We invite you to use our tips below to help you float through the holidays with beaming grace and wellness.
  • Eat healthy and regularly throughout the day and enjoy a proper meal before you attend any of your holiday events.  Showing up famished or even teetering on the edge of hunger could have you cozying up to the food table instead of to your favorite people.  Once alcohol comes into the game judgement goes out the window, and the food table can turn into a calorie catastrophe.
  • Avoid refined starches.  Most baked goods like muffins, breads, and desserts (even the ones labeled gluten free) are packed with refined flours, low quality ingredients, and sugars.  Reach for whole food starches instead like quinoa, sweet potato, and butternut squash spiced with cinnamon or cooked with a little ghee.
  • Drink lots of water and herbal teas.  If you choose to indulge in a drink or two commit to having a 16oz glass of water afterward or between your drinks.  Once you get water in your glass you may be less likely to go back to alcohol (just keep your glass or tea cup full).  Treat your cocktail or wine as if it were a dessert.  Alcohol has 7 calories per gram (carbs have 4, fats 9) and those calories add up quick.  Plus drinking hinders your best judgement.  When judgement goes out the door, so does your anti-cookie ammunition.
  • If it’s a potluck choose to bring a dish that you can indulge in and know will serve your body well too like a harvest salad filled with your favorite fall fruits, mashed sweet potatoes with cinnamon, spaghetti squash with fresh herbs, or a quinoa dish.  If you are in charge of bringing dessert make whole food truffles (recipe below) or bring some raw dark chocolate with you.  In place of a bottle of wine consider bringing a pretty glass bottle filled with sparkling water you’ve infused with herbs or fresh fruit like pomegranate.
  • Bring your toothbrush, a small toothpaste, floss, and a travel sized mouthwash.  Excuse yourself to the lieu and clean up your dirty mouth.  Often when you clean your mouth you lose the desire to eat, and many foods just don’t taste good after brushing.  Give it a shot.  At the very least, everyone will be impressed with your minty fresh breath.
  • Let your clothes be a friendly reminder of appropriate portion sizes.  Holidays are absolutely about indulging a bit, but it’s easy to overindulge.  Wearing clothing that doesn’t ‘give’ or forgive may help keep you from over eating.  Ladies, let’s keep it classy.  Heels may help you from over drinking – don’t lose your hot-ness by drinking too much and getting a case of the wobbles.
  • Keep the 80/20 rule in mind.  80% of the time eat a clean, plant based diet and 20% of the time be a little more indulgent.  Remind yourself of your goals, and how you want to look and feel.  Just because you start to overeat or slip up with a few too many sweets, don’t self sabotage by adding insult to injury.  Nip it in the bud and get on track before your body has a much harder time getting back to balance.  If you know you are the type of person who cannot stop with just one bite, don’t start.  Rather keep sipping your sparkling water, herbal tea, or go for a minty gargle.
  • Be truly engaged.  Rather than making the occasion all about the food or drink table and feeling like you have to try everything, pick one thing to enjoy and really tune into your friends and family.   You’ll have a much better time by making deep personal connections and won’t feel the need to nibble since your mind will be active on other things.
  • And lastly, after a day or night of indulging let your digestion rest and choose to do a cleanse day or simply start your day light with a green juice or superfood smoothie.  Stop into B Bar this week to pick up juices, smoothies, elixers, hang over cures (yes, you heard that right!), and all things healthy to support your beaming lifestyle.
Amaretto Truffle Balls1/8 cup almonds
1/8 cup whole cacao beans (you can substitute nibs)
1/4 cup dried goji berries
1/4 cup raisins
sea salt to taste
1/2 – 1 tsp agave
1/8 tsp organic almond extract
1 tbsp powdered cacao or shredded dried coconut for outer coatingToss the almonds and cacao beans into the food processor. Process them down to smaller pieces. Add the gojis, raisins, a couple cranks of coarse sea salt, a drizzle of agave (about 1/2 a tsp), and the smallest amount of almond extract (a little goes a LONG way). Continue to process in your food processor until it turns into sticky granules.  Spoon out the sticky dough and roll into small balls. Roll the small balls into the cacao powder or shredded coconut.
Makes about 7 small balls.
